Grace James, a 38-year-old woman from the small Pacific Island nation of Kiribati, escapes an abusive marriage and flees to the US, where she finds herself trapped in the country’s asylum system for 10 years. This poetic portrait of a woman in limbo follows Grace’s haunting memories as they begin to resurface, of Grace’s former lovers and of her disappearing homeland, a country forecast to be entirely submerged in the ocean in as few as 20 years.
